Worth Keeping

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. - Matthew 6:20

In 2006, New Zealand's five-cent coin was withdrawn from circulation and demonetised. For a time, people could still spend any coins they had, but eventually they became worthless as currency.

The same is true of everything we own. One day, every dollar we possess will lose all value to us. We can't take any of it with us when we die. Yet Jesus teaches that, while there's still time, we can exchange earthly wealth for heavenly treasure.

I mentioned in last week’s devotional that we were meeting to prepare the church budget to be presented at our next AGM. I was encouraged that the discussion wasn't about hoarding God's gifts, but using them wisely for what will last. Your generous giving is being invested in the work of Christ's kingdom, where the returns are eternal.

This principle applies to all of life. God entrusts us with temporary gifts: money, time, abilities and possessions; not just to enjoy, but to invest in his everlasting kingdom. It takes wisdom and discernment, but ultimately it's a joyful exchange: trading what is temporary for what is eternal.

May God give us generous hearts, trusting his promise that no investment made for Christ is ever wasted.
