We are a church Family – God’s Household

(In the lead-up to our vote on our new elder nominees, we’ll have extra opportunities to see their gifts in action, including in these devotionals.)

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household. - Ephesians 2:19

As believers, we are familiar with the phrase, “we are family”. This passage tells us that we are not only family, but members of God’s household. It is a relationship even more intimate than just family. It indicates that we are to live our lives together. We are to be involved in each other’s lives. We are no longer foreigners or aliens. In Acts 2:44-47 we see how the early church operated.

Family can, and often do, live apart. Maybe seeing each other from time to time. Scripture describes our relationship as members of God’s household. A household lives life together on a daily basis. They eat together, they pray together, they talk together. They share their joys and their pain together.

Often in the modern Western church, we, like the world, have become very individualistic. That is not what God wants His church to be.

How can we as a church meet God’s expectation as His family?

We must be a family that has a deep understanding as to what it means to be brothers and sisters in Christ, truly loving one another.

We must have a genuine care for our brothers and sisters, which may mean sacrificing ourselves, giving of ourselves in service, and giving of our finances.

We must be a praying family, both in personal and corporate prayers.

Above all, we must be a family that loves Christ above everything else.

May God’s Spirit enable us to live out God’s mandate to live as members of God’s household at King’s Grace.
